Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I choose Common Energy?

Common Energy enables you to save money and lower your carbon footprint in minutes. You gain the peace of mind that your home is supporting lower cost clean energy. We are committed to providing you with the best possible service, and a lifetime savings!

How does Common Energy source its clean energy?

Common Energy partners with solar and wind developers across the country who build clean energy projects, in particular solar and wind farms. We source energy directly from these installations.

How does this energy get to me?

New laws in many states, including New York, Massachusetts, and Minnesota, require electric utilities to permit other companies to direct clean energy to companies and individuals. Once you sign up, Common Energy works with your utility to direct the lower cost clean energy to your account. We do all the work in the background so this process is seamless for you.

How do I save money?

When you sign up with Common Energy, the clean electricity will show up as a credit on your existing electricity bill. Once you receive the credit, Common Energy will invoice you for that same electricity at a discount to the utility’s rate, typically 10%. As a result, you can transition to clean energy and save money as soon as you are connected.

Does this mean I will receive two electricity bills?

Yes. With Common Energy you will continue to receive a bill from your current utility which will now show a credit from the clean energy. Then, after you have received the credit, Common Energy will invoice you for the clean energy at the discounted rate.

What is my environmental impact of choosing Common Energy?

A typical household consumes approximately 10,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity each year. Depending on your utility’s energy source, each household emits between 12,000 and 15,000 pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2) each year when they use utility power. The moment you are connected to a Common Energy, all of our energy is 100% clean. This reduces your emissions decrease by 80-90%, preventing 9,600 – 13,500 pounds of carbon emissions every year.

How long does the connection process take?

Getting you connected to a clean energy project typically takes between 1 and 3 months, depending on your utility. Once you sign up, we provide your account number to your utility. There is no disruption or change in service to your account. We will simply notify you when the clean energy is flowing to you.

What do I need to qualify?

There are four criteria. You need to (a) have an electric utility bill in your name; (b) live in the same area (“load zone”) as a Common Energy clean energy project; (c) meet our flexible credit requirements; and (4) provide banking information so that we can pass on your savings.
